ALCANENA

Alcanena belongs to the Santarém district, it is composed by ten villages located between the Maciço Calcário Estremenho and Bacia Terciária do Tejo and it is characterized by fertile soils and significant water resources.

The variety of landscapes of the region is based on two distinct areas: the Mountain (north) characterized by elevated and rough surfaces of the Serra de Aire e Candeeiros, and the district (south), where the plains, low hills and slopes are extended. Here, fits the Bacia Hidrográfica of Rio Alviela, the most important karstic spring in the country.

According to some historians, the origin of the village dates way back, to the Arab occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, which has inherited the name and establishing the development of the work tanning of skins.

Land of republican ideals, its history is, above all, the history of tanning, leaving little doubt about the crucial matter of this industry to its claim as a significant center of population from the seventeenth century.

In this region, be sure to visit: the Caves (Grutas de Mira de Aire was elected one of the seven natural wonders of Portugal), the Polje de Minde, the natural sights, the Rio Alviela spring, the natural park of Serra de Aires e Candeeiros, the Sanctuary of Fátima, the Doll Museum, Carsoscópio/Geódromo, etc.

What to visit in Alcanena _Eurosol Hotels

Coming from the A1, take the exit “Torres Novas/A23/IP6” right after the toll plaza, follow directions to “Alcanena/Santarém”. Turn left into the N243 in the direction “Alcanena/Leiria”.

At the first roundabout take the second exit, follow the sign Alcanena until you reach the center of the village.

Next to City Council follow the signs ‘Monsanto/Praia Fluvial’, through the “Rua 25 de Abril”. Next to the Post Office, turn left onto “Jose Afonso” street.
